The Pet Refuge – since 1976

The North Kingstown-Exeter Animal Protection League (NKEAPL) has been the driving force behind the operation of the compassionate no-kill Pet Refuge since its inception in 1968. In 1976, we expanded our reach by officially incorporating “Exeter” into our name, reflecting our commitment to serve a broader community.

As a private, nonprofit organization, the NKEAPL relies on a combination of ongoing fundraising events, such as bazaars and tag sales, and the generosity of individuals who contribute their time, money, and resources. We are deeply grateful for the support we receive from friends, members, business leaders, and community figures, which enables us to carry out our mission effectively.

Our primary mission at the no-kill Pet Refuge is to provide a nurturing and safe haven for animals who have endured abuse and neglect, as well as those who, due to various circumstances, can no longer remain in their original homes. To fulfill this mission, we offer our animal residents an abundance of love, attention, necessary pet medications, and top-quality veterinary care.

It’s important to note that the no-kill Pet Refuge operates independently and is not reliant on financial support from the town of North Kingstown or the state of Rhode Island. We do not receive any municipal or state funding, which underscores the significance of community contributions.

In our commitment to responsible pet ownership and animal welfare, we ensure that all our animals are meticulously screened for feline leukemia and feline AIDS. Moreover, they receive essential vaccinations, including rabies shots, regular deworming, and are spayed or neutered before they become available for adoption. These measures play a vital role in our efforts to combat the overpopulation of unwanted animals and promote a more humane society.

In closing, the NKEAPL and its no-kill Pet Refuge stand as a testament to the unwavering dedication of our supporters, volunteers, and staff in providing a haven for animals in need and advancing the cause of animal welfare in our community. Your continued support helps us make a lasting difference in the lives of these deserving creatures.
